Who We Dance For
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was the first hospital in the United States dedicated exclusively to children. An average day at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia occurs with 200 children visiting the emergency department, 32 children receiving cancer treatments, 28 children being treated with heart problems, and 4 children admitted after a serious injury or illness. They end up treating over 1.3 million patients annually. Along with their constant childcare, CHOP currently has over 1,500 research studies taking place.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has been ranked one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals in the country. CHOP was just voted the Best Children’s Hospital by Parents Magazine. It was also voted to have the best Cancer Care, Orthopedic Care, Emergency Care, Preemie Care, Heart Care, and Pulmonary Care. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s research centers have been known to produce multiple treatments for multiple diseases.
Even though CHOP is one of the most prestigious children's hospitals in the world, Children's Miracle network guarantees every child's access to the hospital, regardless of their family's ability to pay. Additionally, every penny raised through Children's Miracle Network goes to essential patient care programs, including the Child Life Department.
The Child Life Department at CHOP
The Child Life Department was founded in 1951 at CHOP and was one of the first programs of its kind after acknowledging the benefits of play for children who are hospitalized. Today, the Child Life Department employs over 60 individuals committed to providing the children at CHOP with ways of not only coping with, but understanding their condition.
The Child Life Department understands the the therapeutic benefits play has on children, and provides programs to encourage this. Programs such as pet therapy, art therapy, and music therapy allow patients to grasp the circumstances they are in and makes being in the hospital much less intimidating. In addition to providing the kids with coping mechanisms, Child Life Specialists aid parents and siblings in understanding their loved one's situation, as well as give children and their families a place to express their feelings about it and heal. The Child Life Department is funded entirely by donations by generous individuals as well as large fundraising events such as HootaThon!
Our Miracle Kids
Our Miracle Kids show us what true strength is. Miracle Kids and their families gather the courage to revisit some of the most difficult times in their lives to show us how much our efforts make an impact. They attend our main event as well as our other fundraising events throughout the year, so we are continuously updated about their conditions. We develop special bonds with our Miracle Kids and families and they consistently remind us of why we dance. Meet our Miracle Kids here!
