We dance for Child Life. The Child Life Department was founded in 1951 at CHOP and was one of the first programs of its kind after acknowledging the benefits of play for children who are hospitalized. Today, the Child Life Department employs over 60 individuals committed to providing the children at CHOP with ways of not only coping with, but understanding their condition. The Child Life Department understands the the therapeutic benefits play has on children, and provides programs to encourage this. The Child Life Department is funded entirely by donations by generous individuals as well as large fundraising organizations such as HootaThon!
Throughout the year, we lead a variety of fundraising events as well as host a 12 hour Dance Marathon event February. We dance for 12 hours to celebrate the lives we've helped both of our Miracle Kids and their families. It is a time for the families to celebrate the lives of their children, as well as a time for the children to enjoy living in that moment without thinking about tests, hospital beds, or when another needle might be headed their way. Dance Marathon is our time to celebrate coming together as a university and memorialize everything we have done throughout the year - every penny we raised, every difference we made no matter how big or small - we made miracles.
We are an organization focused on making the lives of our Miracle Families and everyone else who has been affected by CHOP easier. HootaThon raises funds and awareness for the Child Life department at CHOP throughout the year and comes together to celebrate at our annual Dance Marathon. In addition to our fundraising events, we also host events for our Miracle Families to meet HootaThoners and share their story with us. HootaThon hopes to make a difference in people's lives and help make being in the hospital less scary.
